A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. The key word to this technology is Geography – this means that some portion of the data is spatial.

GIS applications include both hardware and software systems and its strength lies in its ability to analyze spatial relationships between layers.  Digital data can also be entered in GIS.

Functions of GIS include: data entry, data display, data management, information retrieval and analysis.
