2. How can I make an appointment to get support from KOLT?

Please send an e-mail to KOLT@ku.edu.tr indicating the subject for which you want to receive support or call us (x1755). If you would like to participate in a speaking group  (conversation circle) you can find the sign-up form on our website. You will receive a link to the chat before the session. You do not need an appointment to get peer tutoring support from  KOLT. The schedule for e-tutoring will be available on our website. When you find your course on our e-tutoring schedule, you can click on the link to access the live chat with a peer tutor. In addition to the KOLT website, you can find the schedules for e-tutoring and conversation circles via our e-mail sent to all students at the beginning of the semester and the information board at the entrance of KOLT. In addition, you can access weekly schedules by clicking icons for the tutoring and conversation sessions in the Koç University mobile application. For our one-to-one academic consultation service, you can request an appointment from our e-mail address (kolt@ku.edu.tr).

3. Who will assist me when I come to KOLT?

Depending on the subject for which you want to support, you will be assisted by our students working in the peer support unit, our students who lead speaking groups, or KOLT staff.  Students who provide peer support are called “tutors”. Tutors are fellow students who have already taken the courses for which they offer support. All our tutors have been very successful in the given course, have strong communication skills, and enjoy providing support to their peers. We, as KOLT, prepare and support them so that they can offer you the best tutoring possible. Students who run speaking groups are called “conversation circle leaders”. They will help you practice your speaking and listening skills in English, French, German, or Turkish in small, friendly groups. KOLT staff can also support you with a one-on-one appointment to address any academic issues you are facing at any point during the semester.

4. Do I need to pay any fees to use KOLT services?

All services provided by KOLT are free of charge. Koç University provides all students with the academic support they need. There is no payment needed, and, because KOLT is affiliated with all units of the university, it is the best place to seek effective assistance. We encourage you to seek academic support from KOLT to ensure that you receive accurate information and high-quality support services.

5. How does KOLT help students adapt to the university and do better in their courses?

KOLT is very pleased to support new entering students at Koç University. We know that students who achieve success in the first year can easily maintain that success. For this  reason, KOLT offers support to English Language Center (ELC) students individually in the  following subjects:

  • What is the importance of my course choices in university? How should I choose my courses?
  • What benefit can non-field core courses and elective courses provide to students during their university education and after graduation?
  • Should I consider double major, minor, and specialization programs? Will any of these benefit me?
  • How can I establish healthy relationships with the faculty members, academic advisors, assistants, and administrative units at the university?

6. How can I become a peer tutor at KOLT and how will serving as a peer tutor benefit me?

KOLT selects and assigns peer tutors with great care in cooperation with faculty members.  KOLT Tutoring Center students who will provide peer support must have received a grade of  A +, A, or A- in the course for which they will offer support. They must also have a high-grade point average (GPA), and the course instructor must approve the student to serve as a  tutor. At the end of each semester, our student colleagues who provide academic peer support receive a certificate showing that they have worked at KOLT, signed by our director and president. KOLT’s certificate can serve as a credential for students who want to continue their academic life abroad in master’s and doctoral programs or to enter the professional world immediately after graduation.

7. How will KOLT’s services continue in Fall 2021 and onwards?

KOLT will continue to offer all its services in a hybrid-flexible (face-to-face and online)  environment in Fall 2021 and onwards. Useful links, schedules, and further information are available on our website. Please email kolt@ku.edu.tr to be added to the KOLT Students page on Blackboard, where we share a wide range of academic support resources.
